Senior Sharks 9-WASS beat St. Thomas Aquinas to silence the doubting Thomases
West Africa SHS have pulled a major upset in the Senior Sharks 9, beating St. Thomas Aquinas SHS in a nail-biting contest in the Second Round series. The Adenta-based school were in fairly fine form as they earned a pleasant victory over St. Thomas Aquinas SHS to progress to the quarterfinals. As a feather in their cap, West Africa SHS (WASS) have now acquired a ranked status for the first time in their Senior Sharks odyssey. This Accra derby by all accounts was a quality encounter, with neither team having the freedom to command affairs carte blanche.
Indeed, both schools made sure to check each other’s progress throughout the contest with WASS winning two rounds against one by St. Thomas Aquinas.
The brightest point in the contest for St. Thomas Aquinas, also called “Old Toms” though, was the STEM Round where the scores were appreciable and they tied with WASS.
But it was WASS who did well to mop up the points differences in the other rounds they won to give them the needed advantage and hand them the ultimate victory.
Round-By-Round Account
St. Thomas Aquinas holds an enviable reputation as 1st Runner-up in Senior Sharks Quiz 1 but that did not cause any worries for West Africa SHS who started well with a score of thirty (30) against twenty (20) to the Cantonments, Accra lads.
The second round, being of Arithmetics and English, was a challenging terrain for both teams even though St. Thomas Aquinas managed ten (10) points.
Two more rounds still lie ahead before the conclusion of this last but one contest of the Second Round group of contests. It was a time for cool heads and fastest fingers.
The two schools went band-for-band in the STEM Round, displaying the sort of quick thinking that makes difficult riddles look pedestrian. Thus, both teams scored thirty (30) points at the end of the round. All eyes were now on the final round.
Like a cork beneath water, WASS rose once again to expertly win the One-On-One round with thirty (30) points with St. Thomas Aquinas dropping down to ten (10) points.
In the final analysis, St. Thomas Aquinas did very well to earn seventy (70) points but the day belonged to West Africa SHS who emerged winners with ninety-five (95) points.
Congratulations to both teams.

Fun Fact!
St. Thomas Aquinas has lost their seeded status and will compete in the national qualifiers in Senior Sharks 10.
