Junior Sharks 9 quarterfinals- Vine Christian high stops red-hot Ayikuma Methodist
High-flying Methodist JHS, Ayikuma, have had their amazing run in the Junior Sharks quiz 9 come to a bittersweet end. The most in-form team from Junior Sharks 9 was beaten by Vine Christian Int. School in a crossfire contest at the quarterfinals of the competition. Having already offloaded the dreaded DPS before this contest, a win against last season’s 4th finishers would have capped a legendary story for Ayikuma.
Vine Christian, however, had other ideas as they were able to successfully torpedo Ayikuma to make a second straight semifinals.
The contest showcased the level of sophistication of the two teams as they dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s.
Vine Christian rowed better and faster in the first two rounds and almost looked like they would reach the coastline with no difficulty.
But Ayikuma, as already established, knew how to navigate the stormy seas, and was able to catch up with Vine Christian.
In the end, only ten (10) stood between victor and vanquished, proof of the quality of this contest.
Right Corner Round
A strong opening round set the stage for an intense quarter-final clash as Vine Christian High School took an early lead with sixty (60) points.
Ayikuma Methodist Basic School scored thirty (30) points, a situation that would prove inimical to their chances of success.
R Cubed Round
One of the favourite rounds for both schools, was underway and promised a wave of heated exchanges.
Both schools applied themselves diligently in the Reading and Writing segment.
The Arithmetic brought new light as Vine Christian missed their first question to allow Ayikuma to add “10” to the “3” answer provided by Vine Christian to arrive at the correct answer of “13”.
Cool, calm, and collected, Ayikuma added their main question through the handiwork of Hamidiya to upend Vine Christian.
Vine Christian, yet again withstood Ayikuma’s incursions to end the round as a more fulfilled team.
Ayikuma Methodist Basic School scored forty-five (45) points, while Vine Christian High School recorded fifty-five (55) points at the end of the round.
STEM Round
Right on the reading of the first riddle, Ayikuma cut in with the right answer, to which Vine responded with their own super interception for ten (10) points.
It was a round of calculated risks and bold initiatives, which ultimately resulted in Ayikuma Methodist Basic School taking the round with twenty (20) points, while Vine Christian High School scored ten (10) points.
One-On-One Round
The contest added to a list of contests that went all the way to the wire, as Naa and Edna positioned themselves as English experts for Vine Christian and Ayikuma respectively.
Naa attempted to manoeuvre her way around the two questions but she wasn’t successful. Edna meanwhile was a passive participant.
Nhyira and Saeed girded themselves to battle it out as Math experts for Vine Christian and Ayikuma respectively.
After missing out on the first question, Nhyira came close on the second question but unfortunately couldn’t earn the ten (10) points at stake.
The best for Ayikuma was yet to come, as Eden met Hamdiya as Science experts for Vine and Ayikuma respectively. The bookmakers’ bet on Hamdiya to get both questions right was on point as she got both questions right.
All eyes were now on Mavis for Vine Christian and on Juanita for Ayikuma as General Knowledge experts. But an anticlimactic end to this contest did not happen.
At the end of the round, twenty (20) went to Ayikuma, and Vine Christian had no points.
With one hundred and twenty (125) points, Vine Christian had won this contest, against
Ayikuma’s one hundred and fifteen (115). Congratulations to both teams.
Fun Fact!
Ayikuma is the only non-ranked team to make it as far as the quarterfinals.
