Senior Sharks 9- Brilliant Adonten suffer heartbreak at the hands of Holy Child
Adonten Senior High School would count themselves unlucky after narrowly missing out on the next stage of Senior Sharks 9 to Holy Child School, Cape Coast. It was a contest whose outcome meant a great deal to the two teams, and it was little wonder that the contest attracted keen interest from fans of both schools. While Adonten SHS were tasting the brainy goodness of the Senior Sharks Quiz for the first time, Holy Child were hoping to make it one better than they did in Senior Sharks 8.
What ensued then was a tightly fought contest in which each school relentlessly pursued their dreams of progressing to the next stage of the competition.
Not unseen in the annals of Senior Sharks, the first two rounds of the contest went in favour of one team, while the last two went the other.
To maintain the unpredictable nature of the contest, the scores obtained by each team at the end of the contest were the same, necessitating a tie-break to determine which school would head eastward or westward out of Studio B, TV3, Accra.
With sweaty palms and heart beating faster than the speed of Artemis II, Holy Child somehow found the courage to hit the buzzer. Correctly that is!
Right Corner Round (Social Literacy)
The contest was neck-and-neck from Round 1, as the scores at the end of the round showed just a ten (10) point difference.
While Holy Child had twenty (20) points, Adonten SHS led the way with thirty (30) points.
R Cubed Round (Literacy and Numeracy)
With the slim lead from the first round as a huge motivator, Adonten SHS pressed on firmly in the R Cubed Round.
Holy Child surprisingly had a torrid time in both the Reading & Writing, and the Arithmetic segments.
Adonten SHS extended their lead with twenty-five (25) points, while Holy Child School lagged behind with fifteen (15) points.
STEM Round (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)
The “Nido Iron For Focus” Round was earnestly underway and whoever lost focus was going to pay the price.
As it turned out, Holy Child was the one who remained focused on the second reading of the riddle and continued impressively towards the finish line.
Adonten were also in the picture nonetheless and managed two correct riddles, but it wasn’t enough to disturb Holy Child who bounced back strongly with twenty (25) points. Adonten SHS ended the round with fifteen (15) points to make the final round a momentous affair.
One-On-One (Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Social Literacy)
In this round, Theresa and Jeffrey represented Holy Child and Adonten respectively, as English experts.
Theresa took all twenty (20) points on offer.
In Math, Maxine and Emmanuel for Holy Child and Adonten, respectively, were paired, but neither was mathematically useful.
Juliana and Alexanda came up as Science experts for Holy Child and Adonten respectively. Adonten’s expert was spot on with his buzz for their first ten (10) points.
Pamela and Kofi then finished the pair of experts for Holy Child and Adonten respectively. But no scores were recorded despite their determination.
At the end of Round 4, Holy Child School had twenty (20) points while Adonten had ten (10) points.
Finally, the total valid scores were eighty (80) apiece which called for extra time to pick out the winner of this pulsating contest.
A pin drop could be heard in the auditorium as the quizmistress began- “Complications with this organ are typically seen in patients presenting with Levine’s sign. Bachmann's bundles and Purkinje fibres depolarise this organ. This organ produces the signal for the QRS complex on an EKG. This organ is divided into four chambers known as the atria…” and zap! Holy Child buzzed like a thunderbolt to deliver the correct answer to hearty jubilation in the Holy Child camp and heartbreak for Adonten SHS. The answer to the riddle, incidentally, was “HEART”.

This Holy Child and Adonten SHS contest went down as the first to be decided via a tie-breaker in Senior Sharks 9.
