Akwadum Methodist Basic School spring first surprise of Junior Sharks 8
Methodist Basic School, Akwadum, sent shock waves reverberating through the Junior Sharks 8 when they defeated Kotoka Basic in their Round 32 stage contest. Before this exciting match-up, a snapshot of the two schools appeared to give Kotoka the upper hand. Akwadum Methodist are newbies trying to find their feet in the Junior Sharks quiz, while Kotoka Basic have been there and done that. By way of a quick memory recall, the Burma Camp-based school have gone all the way to the second-runner-up position, a feat achieved in Season 5 of the competition.
Beyond their highest achievement in Junior Sharks 5 also, they’ve been regular customers in the Ranked and Super Ranked schools zone.
To pick Kotoka Basic ahead of Akwadum Methodist Basic in any objective prediction was, therefore, logical.
But once again, the scores at the end of the contest confirmed that the game is played on the turf, and not in the boardroom.
Round 1 (R Cubed Round)
Kotoka JHS started well in Round 1, as many would have expected.
They gave themselves the best head start possible, scoring a perfect score but for one question.
Akwadum could not match Kotoka in this department, and could only come up with answers to three questions.
At the end of the round, Kotoka JHS was extremely elated with their seventy (70) points while Akwadum Methodist Basic took thirty (30) of the total eighty (80) available.
Round 2 (Right Corner)
Akwadum Methodist, as though competing under a new wave did extremely well in Arithmetic with well-timed answers to the questions.
In fact, the accuracy of their answers was to be one of the most delightful scenes in Junior Sharks 8 so far.
At the end of the round, Akwadum had jumped into the lead with fifty(50) points while Kotoka went home with fifteen (15) points.
Round 3 (STEM Round)
Before the round began, Richlove was brought in to steer Akwadum Methodist to the finish line.
Kotoka’s first buzz of the riddle could not neutralize the splendid performance of Akwadum in the Second Round.
Ironically, the answer required to the first riddle was “neutralization”.
With the fear of points deductions haunting them, all teams erred on the side of caution and stayed away from the buzzer.
That loud silence, though, was eventually broken by Kotoka with a correct answer.
Akwadum, not to be upstaged, took the battle to Kotoka and brought home three successful buzzes, to scenes of wild jubilation.
Finally, Kotoka would end the round strongly as they hit the last question of the round for ten (10) points.
In the end, another round went well for Akwadum, thereby giving them a comfortable thirty (30) points as against fifteen (15) points to Kotoka Basic.
Round 4 (One-on-one)
At this stage, a pin dropped in the auditorium could be heard, as the tension reached fever pitch.
Quickly, experts in English, Jocobed, and Kevin for Akwadum and Kotoka, respectively, made their way onto the podium.
No buzzes came from either contestant on the two questions.
In Maths, Japhet and Jennifer for Kotoka and Akwadum, respectively, showed up.
Jennifer hazarded two guesses- but returned with no points.
David and Ato Kwamina for Akwadum and Kotoka in Science were up next.
David snatched the first question brilliantly, while the second question passed by safely.
Derrick and Obed for Akwadum and Kotoka then came in as experts in General Knowledge.
Two questions were asked, but no correct scores came from the experts.
At the end of round 4, scores gave ten (10) points to Akwadum and Kotoka with no points.
With one hundred and twenty (120) points, Akwadum had carried the day to leave Kotoka Basic with one hundred (100) points.
The big tree, Kotoka Basic, had fallen by the small axe, Akwadum Methodist, to the dismay of fans.
Knowing the mental toughness of Kotoka Basic, however, we are sure to see them bounce back from this defeat, stronger and better.
Congratulations to both teams.
