JuniorSharks: ICS vrs Services

A chance to pick the third semifinals slot was up for grabs when International Community School (ICS) faced Services JHS in the Round of Eight of Junior Sharks 4.

Services JHS was hoping to follow the path of their neighbors, Kotoka JHS, into the semifinals.

ICS was also coming into the contest with a huge reputation to protect. Coupled with that, a first semifinal appearance in Junior Sharks also beckoned.

Round 1

ICS, presenting same set-up as their last contest against The Lord's Star Int. was the first to begin the Round.

Not for the first time in this competition, they floundered in Round 1. ICS ended the round with a face-saving thirty (30) points just as they had in their last contest.

Services saw the opportunity presented to open a gap and they took it with both hands. The fifty (50) points they obtained was creditable, vis-à-vis ICS' scores.

Round 2

Questions in this round concerns Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. First question of the round exposed the poor knowledge the contestants had of the end times.

Be it apocalyptic or eucharistic, none could correctly answer eschatology: "The study of death, heaven and hell".

Except for this, other questions that required "one word that replaces the study of this phenomenon" were nicely dealt with. Services was to be the team with the zeal for the Reading and Writing, hitting most questions correctly.

For a contest that was featuring six girls out of eight, the mental ability of contestants in Math was commendable.

Alexis for ICS in particular was admirable while Vanessa equally showed her mettle.

At the end of Round 2, ICS had fifteen(15) points while Services maintained a slim lead with twenty-five(25 points).

Round 3

Obrempong Aseda Osefo was brought on for Jordan. The confidence with which he introduced himself was enough to send shivers down the spine of any opposition.

Whether his confidence would translate to scores was another matter altogether. When the first question of the Round was asked, Services' Vanessa was right on cue with "Cesarean section" as the correct answer.

As witnessed in earlier contests, a substitution can either derail or fill the sail of a team.

Obrempong's introduction turned out to be a master stroke as he buzzed repeatedly with correct answers.

His positive contribution even drew admiration and applause from his own colleagues up there with him.

When the STEM Round came to an end, ICS had fifty-five (55) points while Services surprisingly bagged only twenty (20) points.

Round 4

The 'one-on-one' round presented the following scholars:

Ethel and Jordan for Services and ICS respectively in the English segment. Jordan picked the first question albeit in such a hurry that she buzzed and answered before quiz mistress could call her. She picked the second question too, easy-peasy. Kekeli for Services and Alexis for ICS came forth in the Math section. Kekeli buzzed and hazarded a guess to the first question. But it was ruled out as incorrect. Alexis was also belled out as she fidgeted with an answer. Again both were belled out on the second question. Obrempon and Vanessa for ICS and Services respectively represented in the Science. Both hit wrong answers to the first question. Shrewd Obrempon was spot on when he picked the second question correctly before Vanessa could even think of an answer. Social Scientists were Jesse and Anne- Marie for Services and ICS respectively. Both failed the task at hand on two occasions on the two questions. Neither could identify the two photos up for identification. On that drab note, the contest came to an end.

ICS had forty (40) points in the last round while Services scored a disheartening zero (0).

With a final score of one hundred and thirty (130) points, ICS were victors for the day.
