Sharks5: St. Peter’s SHS books a place in the quarterfinal at the expense of Pope John SHS.

One of the most prominent rivalries among second cycle institutions in Ghana crossed paths at the fifth contest of Senior Sharks 5, Round of 16.

St. Peter's SHS, Nkwatia, and Pope John SHS and Minor Seminary, Koforidua, are two great schools which have their umbilical cords from the Roman Catholic Church.

But when it comes to curricula and co-curricula activities St. Peter's, a.k.a Persco and Pope John, alias Pojoss compete fiercely like there is no nexus between them.

Such Senior Sharks contests with bragging rights as an added impetus always hold irresistible prospects.

As such, fans held their breath as these two all-boys schools aimed their intellectual arsenals at each other.

The battle on the ground, however, painted a totally different scenario from what many were eagerly looking forward to.

What was billed as a “showdown" turned out to be a “no show” as Pope John succumbed to their arch-nemesis without a fight.

Round 1

It was Pope John which set the ball rolling in this contest, proudly sponsored by Kellogg's.

As fans would recall, Pope John struggled in their first contest and they did so again in the Round of 16.

They had forty(40) points after their two(2) allotted minutes for answering eight questions had expired.

St. Peter's organized themselves better and tackled their eight set of questions with incredible finesse.

They became only the second team in Senior Sharks 5 to have a perfect score of eighty(80).

Round 2

Ernest and Elvis came on board for Pojoss and St. Peter's respectively as both schools made a statement of intent.

To say that St. Peter’s were ruthless in the Arithmetic segment of this R-cubed round is an understatement.

The reigning Eastern regional National Science and Maths Quiz(NSMQ) champions did not miss a single Arithmetic question.

Coupled with their fine form in the Reading and Writing, they were duly rewarded with an emphatic and fantastic ninety-five(95) points.

Pope John's descent into an abyss had started at this juncture as they ended the round with negative five (-5) points.

Round 3

In comes the STEM Round, and the last vestiges of competitive spirit in Pope John appear to have dissipated like smoke loses itself in the sky.

Pope John were looking flabbergasted, stunned and humiliated.

Their body language portrayed that of total resignation at the turn of events.

It had become a nightmarish experience for them in the Senior Sharks 5 and one they hoped to quickly erase from memory.

Pope John's already abject situation worsened as they for the second time in the contest ended a round with negative score.

They had negative fifteen(-15) points while St. Peter’s maintained their forward march with thirty-five(35) points.

Round 4

This contest was done and dusted by the time Round 4 was activated.

Regardless, the One-on-one round had to be competed for as a matter of course.

Thus, Elvis for St. Peter’s and Peter for Pope John came face-to-face as English experts.

Elvis picked the two questions effortlessly.

Math specialists Silas and Setornam for Pope John and St. Peter's respectively responded to the call to ‘show working’.

Both of their answers given to the two questions were ruled as incorrect.

Ernest and Kwasi Amo showed up as Science geeks for Pope John and St. Peter’s respectively.

After both had missed the first question, Kwesi Amo hit the second question correctly to an ecstatic eruption of joy from Persco fans gathered.

Simon and Emmanuel were the Social Literacy experts representing Pope John and St. Peter’s respectively.

Simon, the only bright spot in this round for Pope John identified the photo of late Burkinabe revolutionary, Thomas Sankara.

The second identification was the hottest afropop song in Africa right now by Kizz Daniel, Buga(Lo Lo Lo), to which neither could identify.

Round 4 scores had St. Peter’s with thirty(30) points while Pope John had ten(10) points.

Like rain in the sky and snow on the mountain, St. Peter’s had amassed the biggest points in Senior Sharks 5 with two and hundred forty(240) points.

Pope John unfortunately could not mount sail to their mast before they could even set sail.

Thirty(30) points was all they got. Better luck next time, Daasebre.
