Senior Sharks 9- Kumasi Girls earn sweet victory over regional mates, Juaben SHS
The first regional derby contest of the Senior Sharks 9, was a source of immense joy for all who watched live and those who monitored via streaming. Two noble schools from the Ashanti Region, Kumasi Girls’ SHS and Juaben SHS, took to the stage to showcase their academic prowess in the most innovative high school quiz of our time. At the end of four rounds of end-to-end action, Kumasi Girls had registered a win to move to the next stage of the competition.
However, the specific rounds painted a different picture from the final results, as Juaben SHS appeared to be on their way to earning the license to stay in the nation’s capital.
Juaben SHS matched Kumasi Girls’ SHS in all the rounds, with Round 2 being the only round that ended up being their Achilles' heel.
As elated as KGee will feel about this regional derby win, they will also need serious reinforcement in their subsequent contests.
Right Corner Round (Social Literacy)
Right from the First Round, both schools did not let each other out of their sights, ending the round with thirty (30) points apiece to keep the contest wide open.
R Cubed Round ( Literacy and Numeracy)
In this round, Kumasi Girls’ made sure to maximise their strength in Reading and Writing, to separate themselves from Juaben SHS.
Both schools disappointingly could not earn any points in the Arithmetic segment, with Juaben suffering more penalties than Kumasi Girls.
This caused the momentum to shift dramatically to Kumasi Girls’ as they ended the round with thirty (30) points while Juaben were heavily disadvantaged by negative twenty-five (-25) points.
STEM Round (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)
Kumasi Girls’ decided to continue their fine form as they buzzed for two out of the first four riddles, but this time, the quizmistress was not so charitable with points.
Juaben, who had been monitoring the activity of Kumasi Girls so far, decided it was time to rise from their sleep. Their first buzz was correct for ten (10) points.
Kumasi Girls’ SHS were not ready for any potential shocks, as they responded with their own correct buzz.
Juaben SHS couldn’t attempt any other riddle, paving the way for Kumasi Girls to attempt the last two questions.
At the end of the round, Juaben SHS bounced back with ten (10) points, while Kumasi Girls’ SHS scored five (5) points.
One-On-One (Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Social Literacy)
Still with a lot to compete for, Patience for Kumasi Girls’ faced Juaben SHS’s Ruth as English experts.
Unfortunately, both experts couldn’t prove themselves as women of great erudition in English.
Fanny and Daniel squared off as experts in Math for Kumasi Girls’ and Juaben SHS respectively. Zero (0) points came from them.
As Science experts Edna and Gerald from Kumasi Girls’ and Juaben SHS respectively got the nod to come and add more points for their schools but it was Gerald who took ten (10) points for Juaben.
Christabel and Honesmous now came on board as General Knowledge experts for Kumasi Girls and Juaben respectively. After both had failed on the first identification, Honesmous went for “Lake Volta”, while Christabel went for “Lake Bosomtwe” on the second identification. The largest natural lake in West Africa was the correct answer.
At the end of the round, both Kumasi Girls’ SHS and Juaben SHS had ten (10) points.
And so for the first regional derby contest of Senior Sharks 9, Juaben SHS went home with thirty (30) points while Kumasi Girls’ were happier with seventy-five (75) points.
