Senior Sharks 9- Wesley Girls’ outwit Kumasi Girls’
The second all-girls pairing at the Senior Sharks 9 competition was a moment of truth for two girls schools with rich academic credentials. Wesley Girls’ High School, Cape Coast, took on Kumasi Girls’ SHS in an entertaining contest to see who would join St. Louis SHS as the girls schools in the upper regions of the competition. On a head-to-head basis, it could be said that Kumasi Girls’ SHS could not hold a candle to Wesley Girls’ High School, given that the latter are Season 4 winners of the competition.
But Kumasi Girls’ climbed to this stage by dint of hard work and not through a game of chance, thereby making this contest highly unpredictable.
And indeed, Kumasi Girls’ would go on to acquit themselves well, particularly in STEM but in the end Wesley Girls’ banked on their vast experience in the competition to earn a gratifying victory.
Right Corner Round (Social Literacy)
Wesley Girls’ are known to be quite adept at Social Literacy, but this range of questions proved something else.
Thus it was not surprising that Wesley Girls’ ended the round with twenty (20) points,
while Kumasi Girls’ SHS scored zero (0) points.
R Cubed Round ( Literacy and Numeracy)
Kumasi Girls’ started well in the English segment but they would engage in careless attempts that made all their efforts futile.
In the Arithmetic segment, only two correct answers came from each side of the lectern, even though Kumasi Girls’ were just whiskers off two attempted questions.
Wesley Girls’ had been more measured in both segments so they were in a relatively better position at the end of the round.
Twenty (20) points went to Wesley Girls High School and Kumasi Girls had zero (0).
STEM Round (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)
The lead being held by Wesley Girls’ (Wey Gey Hey) notwithstanding, this contest was still anybody’s game.
“C is incorrect” went straight to the Cape Coasters. That was the first riddle of the round. Kumasi Girls’ preferred to stay out of the action.
Wesley Girls’ made amends on the second question which had earlier been missed by Kumasi Girls.
Thankfully, Kumasi Girls’ displayed great confidence to bag the next riddle. It is the “Nido iron for focus” round, and the pinhole focus of the girls on both sides said it all.
Kumasi Girls’, in the nick of time, buzzed again to correctly identify which bond is the longest?
A strategically battled round ended with five (5) points for Kumasi Girls’, while Wesley Girls’ SHS dropped to negative five(-5) points.
One-On-One (Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Social Literacy)
Kimberley and Patience stood for Wesley Girls’ High School and Kumasi Girls’. Both experts delivered their answers correctly.
Mathematics experts came as Queen and Fanny for Wesley Girls’ and Kumasi Girls’ SHS. It was guesswork from both experts.
In Science, Nana Fosuaa was in the shot to meet Edna for Wesley Girls’ and Kumasi Girls’.
Nana Fosuaa became the brightest so far amongst the experts when she bagged two questions neatly.
Clara and Christabel came forth as General Knowledge experts for Wesley Girls’ and Kumasi Girls’ in the battle of the “Cs”.
With no points coming from the last experts, the end of the contest scores stood at thirty (30) for Wesley Girls’ and ten (10) for Kumasi Girls.
At the end of the contest, Kumasi Girls’ had earned fifteen (15) points, while Wesley Girls’ had earned sixty-five (65) points. Congratulations to both schools.
Fun Fact!
Wesley Girls’ joins St. Louis as the only girls schools to progress into the Round 16.
